But be aware – you are purchasing more of a coupon, than a gift certificate – they come with a lot of restrictions. Someone else posted a question about giving these as gifts – and the consensus was that it was kind of tacky and too much of a burden to put on the gift recipient. So it would be better to pay regular price for one outright from the restaurant itself.

Yes you are right; High End restaurants like Le Bernardin and John Georges never make contract with such sites.

You might be able to get occasional deals in private networks such as A SMALL WORLD if you are a member or Open Table but I don’t recommend it as your main strategy.

High-end restaurants in New York are basically two categories from pricing perspective:

1) Always expensive: Per Se in Colombus Circle falls into this category: No matter if you are having lunch or dinner or whether it is Restaurant week period or not. They are always expensive and offer no deal. The menu in Per Se is either a fixed price 5 OR 9 course experience from $250 and up.

2) There are restaurants in which lunch is very cheap with exceptional quality and then the dinner is expensive:

- Nougatine (by Jean Georges) falls into this category; 3 course lunch they offer is very popular and it comes for about $25.

- Ma Peche is also another one.

At the end, in order to summerize, I suggest you go and have lunch: Many of high-profile restaurants have cheap lunch option.

Also you might get coupons or discounts in restaurant week period in Open Table and NYCGO.

$30 each or for both?
If $30 for both then I would go to Chili’s, and order the 2 for $20 deal. Red Lobster has some sort of ‘deal’ going on for about $15 each. See if you can find a coupon. Sign up on Facebook and on your favorite restaurants web sites. They will often send coupons for savings.

I would also suggest checking out www.restaurant.com. If you sign up on their site, they will discount the certificates during the month and they will send emails when they are discounting them. You can often get some great deals on Mom and Pop restaurants (no big chain restaurants) by using their certificates. I use them often and LOVE the deals.

Outback offers a great $10 “Outback Special” steak meal. It is a small sirloin (I think it is 6 oz) with potato and salad for $10. They often have email coupons, too. I have one now for $5 off 2 dinners. If you could get one of those and get the $10 meals, it would be a great deal on a steak dinner and a great atmosphere. If you drink water, you could get out for around $20!

You can dress up and go most anyplace short of fast food. Just go and have fun! Happy birthday to your man.
